Hey James. This doesn't answer your question fully, but another NAT
traversal API to checkout is libnatpmp which takes care of UPnP port
forwarding. MiniUPnP offers another API for Apple's alternative standard
through libminiupnpc4-dev. The upnpc binary is very useful for testing
whether a port forwarded successfully or not by listing the current port
forwarding table on your router.
